NMED Recognizes Five New Mexico Businesses for Environmental Leadership

The New Mexico Environment Department’s (NMED) Green Zia Environmental Leadership Program has recognized five New Mexico businesses for their commitment towards environmental stewardship by implementing pollution prevention practices.

“As a result of these worthwhile efforts, these businesses are both saving money and reducing impacts on the environment,“ NMED Secretary David Martin said. “The New Mexico Environment Department is pleased to recognize these environmental leaders and we encourage all New Mexico businesses to take steps to promote conservation.”

The following businesses have been recognized as Green Zia Environmental Leadership participants for 2011:

• Raytheon Di?e Facility, Silver Level

• Montoya’s Painting in Albuquerque, Bronze Level

• EA Engineering, Science and Technology, Inc., Bronze Level

HB Construction of Albuquerque, Bronze Level

• Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, Bronze Level

There are three levels of recognition. The Bronze Level recognizes businesses that have made a commitment to reducing their footprint and are beginning to track their reductions and impacts on the environment. The Silver level participants have been measuring and tracking their waste streams and have set goals for reduction over the next year. Top level participants at the Gold Level have Environmental Management Systems in place and can demonstrate substantial savings and reductions.

The Green Zia Environmental Leadership Program is a part of the NMED Pollution Prevention Program and has been in place since 1996 and is a way for NMED to recognize businesses working towards environmental stewardship and help them reach their environmental goals. Many of the businesses that have implemented pollution prevention practices are saving money through water and energy conservation, recycling, and reducing their waste.

“This is a way to recognize those businesses who are working hard to reduce their footprint while saving money,” Green Zia Manager Michelle Vattano said. “This is a ‘win-win’ partnership for the state and the business community. We encourage other local businesses to join Green Zia Environmental Leadership Program.”

Vattano has been working with businesses across the state for several years and encourages businesses to participate in the program. Participating businesses must be in compliance with their regulatory authority and have a good standing in the community.

Applications for the 2012 Green Zia Program will be available on our website in early 2012. The New Mexico Environment Department offers marketing incentives to local businesses that participate in the program.
